Garment Sewing Series! Fall 2022, 4 payments
This series will take place both virtually on Zoom, and in-person at Mary's studio inside Whitty Books, 2306 East Admiral Boulevard in Tulsa. Starts September 10th!
Have you dreamt of making your own clothes but have no idea how to get started? Now you can, with Mary Make & Do, Owl & Drum, & Whitty Books!
Mary will teach you how to make 4 basic, beginner-friendly garments: 1) a top 2) a shirt 3) a skirt 4) trousers/shorts with the patterns provided in The Act of Sewing*, a new book by Sonya Philip. Whitty Books will provide your copy, you will choose your fabric from Owl & Drum's uniquely modern collection, and Mary will make learning as easy and fun as possible!
[*The Act of Sewing, by Sonya Philip, offers an in depth guide to sewing simple garments for both beginner and experienced makers, with an introduction to sewing terms and techniques, as well as detailed instructions and diagrams. The sizes range from XS to 5X - gotta love the inclusivity! The book includes adjustments for fit as well as instructions to modify the patterns to create your own unique garments, which you will be prepared to venture into after learning the basics.]
This series is designed for all skill levels, and beginners are definitely welcome. The only requirement is that you are familiar with how to use a sewing machine, and Mary can help you with that. If you are new to sewing we recommend that you attend our Absolute Beginner Sewing Class, or schedule a private lesson to learn the machine. Easy peasy!
You’ll attend up to six classes total, during Saturday Studio hours, 1-5pm, on most Saturdays, September 10th (orientation) through December 10th.
The fee of $508 will be broken into 4 monthly installments of $127. The first payment is charged when you sign up for the class, and an invoice for the remaining three payments will be sent each month for the following three months to the email address that is used when signing up. The fee includes instruction, the book, beautiful fabric, pattern tracing material, and elastic, for each garment. (If you already have the book, we can subtract that from your second payment.
For those who have attended previously, the fee will be adjusted to remove the price of the book and the fabric. First payment $127, 2nd and 3rd payments $96. You’ll attend 6 Saturday afternoons of your choice (space allowing) from from September 10 through December 13th.
Tools & Materials:
For classes in the studio, you will need to bring: your book & patterns, a sewing machine, thread, basic sewing supplies such as scissors, pins, and marking tools. (Mary has sewing machines and tools for you to borrow if needed.)
For sewing at home on Zoom, you will need: a sewing machine, thread and basic sewing supplies such as scissors, pins, iron and ironing surface, and marking tools, ballpoint pen, ruler, and consider getting yourself a pressing ham.
Muslin fabric is recommended, but not required. If you would like to sew "test garments" out of muslin fabric (or old sheets, or thrift store fabric, etc) before cutting into your beautiful Owl & Drum fabric, you will need 11 yards, 45" wide to test the 4 patterns. Mary will give you more info about this at orientation.
Class size is limited, and masks will be worn if anyone attending is high risk- just let us know. Pretty please be fully vaccinated before signing up. We intend to help keep our community as safe as possible.
